You are given a topic — often two opposing views — and write an argumentative essay of at least 600 characters.
Markers look for a clear thesis, a logical structure with at least two lines of argument, a response to the other side and a conclusion, in formal written Chinese with a good range of vocabulary and connectors.

- Plan an introduction with your thesis, two or three body paragraphs, a counter-argument and a conclusion.
- Use argument connectors: 首先, 其次, 此外, 诚然…但是, 由此可见.
- Leave time to check the characters and reach 600.

- Sitting on the fence with no thesis.
- Giving examples without linking them back to the argument.
- Falling short of the length.

How is HSK 9 Writing Part 2 marked?
By trained examiners, not automatically. Your answer is marked against set criteria: whether the task is done, how accurate and varied the language is, and how well it is organised.
Is pinyin printed at HSK 9?
No. At HSK 9 the paper is printed in characters only, so you need to recognise the characters themselves.
