How HSK 3 Writing Part 1 works

You are given four to six words or phrases in jumbled order and write them out as one correct sentence.

The part tests the core of Chinese word order: subject, then time and place, then verb and object; where adverbs go; how 把 and 被 sentences are built; where complements sit. The sentence has to be written out, so the characters must be right too.

How to approach it

  1. Find the verb first — it anchors the sentence.
  2. Put the subject before it, and time or place between subject and verb.
  3. Put adverbs such as 都, 也, 已经 and 常常 directly before the verb.
  4. Check the special patterns: 把 + object + verb + complement, 比 comparisons, 是…的.

Common mistakes

  • Putting time or place after the verb, as in English.
  • Misplacing 都 and 也.
  • Copying a character wrongly from the given words.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are in HSK 3 Writing Part 1?

5. It is part 1 of 2 in the HSK 3 Writing section, which has 10 questions and lasts about 15 minutes, for 100 points.

How is HSK 3 Writing Part 1 marked?

Automatically. Every question has one correct answer and all carry the same weight. A wrong answer costs nothing more than a blank one, so never leave a question empty.

Is pinyin printed at HSK 3?

No. At HSK 3 the paper is printed in characters only, so you need to recognise the characters themselves.

Can more than one order be right?

Usually there is one natural order. Build the sentence a native speaker would say, not merely one that is understandable.

Do I need punctuation?

Yes — end the sentence with the right mark, 。 or ?.

Can I practise HSK 3 Writing Part 1 online?

Yes. HSK Test has practice sets for this part, built like the real paper. Create a free account to start; your answers and scores are saved, so you can see how you are improving.
