How HSK 3 Writing Part 2 works

Each sentence has a gap with pinyin printed above it. You write the character that belongs in the gap.

It tests recall, not recognition: you have to produce the character. With so many homophones in Chinese, the sentence tells you which character with that sound is meant — 练 not 连, 在 not 再.

Write the character for the pinyin shown.

How to approach it

  1. Read the whole sentence to see which word the gap is part of.
  2. Recall the whole word, then write the missing character.
  3. Check the tone in the pinyin matches the character you chose.
  4. Write carefully: a wrong or missing stroke counts as wrong.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a homophone that is right in sound only.
  • Getting the tone right but the radical wrong.
  • Relying on recognition without ever practising writing.
