How HSK 3 Speaking Part 1 works
You hear a sentence and repeat it aloud exactly. Your answer is recorded and marked by an examiner.
The sentences grow in length through the part. What is marked is accuracy: every word, in order, with correct tones and clear pronunciation.

How to approach it
- Listen to the whole sentence, grouping it into chunks of meaning.
- Repeat straight away while it is fresh.
- Keep the tones and rhythm of the original.
- If you miss a word, carry on — do not stop.
Common mistakes
- Dropping small words such as 了, 的 and 都.
- Flattening the tones.
- Stopping when a word is missed.

How many questions are in HSK 3 Speaking Part 1?
15. It is part 1 of 3 in the HSK 3 Speaking section, which has 27 questions and lasts about 17 minutes, for 100 points.
How is HSK 3 Speaking Part 1 marked?
By trained examiners, not automatically. Your answer is marked against set criteria: whether the task is done, how accurate and varied the language is, and how well it is organised. At HSK 3 the speaking section is the separate HSKK exam, with a certificate of its own.
Is pinyin printed at HSK 3?
No. At HSK 3 the paper is printed in characters only, so you need to recognise the characters themselves.
How long do I have to answer?
A few seconds — enough to repeat the sentence once.
How can I practise?
Shadowing: play a sentence, repeat it immediately, and compare. Short daily sessions work better than long occasional ones.
